Lions Pride: Minerva High School Celebrates Historic 140th Annual Commencement Ceremony

MINERVA, OH — On a memorable evening on Thursday, May 14, 2026, Dr. Robert H. Hines Stadium was filled with pride, emotion, and celebration as Minerva High School hosted its 140th Annual Graduation Commencement. Family, friends, and faculty gathered in the stands to honor the Class of 2026 as they crossed the stage to receive their diplomas and take their next steps into the future.
Inspiring Words and Emotional Goodbyes

The evening was highlighted by addresses that captured the spirit of the graduating class. Class Speaker Rachel Weaver took the podium to deliver an inspiring and encouraging message to her peers. Focusing heavily on the themes of togetherness and overcoming adversity, Weaver reminded her classmates of the resilience they built together during their time at Minerva.

The ceremony also featured a sentimental Guest Speaker Address from Mrs. Deb Imler, the beloved Minerva High School Choir Director. Mrs. Imler, who is set to retire at the conclusion of this school year, was specially voted on by the student body to deliver this year's address. She shared her immense pride in the Minerva school district and community, offering a heartfelt farewell after years of dedicated service to the district's music programs.

Following her speech, the MHS Choir delivered a moving vocal performance for the large audience.

Guidance for the Future
Superintendent Mark Scott also addressed the graduates, offering timeless pieces of advice for the road ahead. Superintendent Scott encouraged the Class of 2026 to always express gratitude to the loved ones, mentors, and teachers who have impacted their journeys. He challenged the graduates to not be afraid to take risks in life as they pursue their personal and professional goals.

Making it Official
Members of the Minerva Board of Education officially presented diplomas to each graduate.
With diplomas in hand, Macy Stowe led the traditional tassel-turning, officially cementing the students' status as Minerva High School alumni. Danika Wagner then came forward to lead the crowd in the Benediction.

Celebration on the Turf
Once the formal ceremony concluded, the new graduates and their families flooded the stadium turf. The field transformed into a stadium of smiles, hugs, and caps as loved ones socialized, celebrated, and took final photos together to commemorate the milestone.

Living up to their chosen Class Motto:
"Wherever you go, go with all your heart."
Congratulations to the Minerva High School Class of 2026! Once a Lion, always a Lion! 🦁🎓

Boys Track Rewrites History; Wood Makes Baseball History

The headline of the spring belongs to the Minerva Boys Track and Field team. After enduring a 45-year drought without a league title, the Lions have captured back-to-back EBC League Championships.

The championship run was heavily anchored by Rowen Hoffee, who was named the EBC Runner of the Year after taking first-team honors in both the 1600M and 800M runs, alongside a victory in the 4x800M relay. Coaching the repeat was Arin Rettig, who rightfully earned EBC Coach of the Year honors.

Over on the diamond, the Lions celebrated an unprecedented individual achievement. Braydon Wood became the first baseball player in Minerva history to be named the EBC League Player of the Year, securing his spot on the First Team after a spectacular season.

MLEA GOLDEN APPLE AWARD ANNOUNCED- Congratulations, Mrs. Karen Johnson!

Thanks to generous sponsors Minerva Rotary Club and Clark, Clark & Chaddock,
the Minerva Local Education Association (MLEA) held its annual Teacher
Appreciation Banquet on Monday, May 18 at Tee House Social at Great Trail
Golf Course. Among the recognitions were first-year - Kamryn Bondoni, Nadia
Gray, Natalie Hinkle, Maggie Masl, Mason Middleton, Mackenzie Scott, and
Zachary Slates; 10 years – Lisa Anthony, Jacalyn Woods; 20 years – Robert Carle,
Aimee Davis, Allison Wukotich; 30 years – Debra Imler; and retiring Michele
Harris - MES, Debra Imler - MHS, and Valerie Slaton – MHS. MLEA Legacy
Scholarships were awarded to Paisley Imler and Alora Boldon.

MLEA is proud to announce the winner of the 2026 Golden Apple award for
teaching excellence. The Honoree was selected by committee from nominations
submitted by students, colleagues, and parents. Over seventy-seven educators were
nominated for the award. The 2026 Honoree is Karen Johnson, a 1st grade teacher
at Minerva Elementary School.

Karen Johnson has spent more than 33 years working with some of
Minerva’s youngest students. Karen grew up in Tiffin, Ohio, and was a graduate of
Tiffin Calvert High School. She went on to earn her bachelor's degree from Walsh
College, with a certificate in Elementary Education. Soon after, Minerva became
her home as she accepted a job in the local school system. Working first in a
kindergarten position, she then became a first grade teacher, which is a title she has
held ever since. Mrs. Johnson has proven herself to be a lifelong learner, earning
her master’s degree from the American College of Education in 2020.

Some of her students remarked, “Mrs. Johnson is the best! She makes arts
and crafts and lets us go outdoors,” and “She makes it fun. We have fun jobs.”
Karen is a dedicated educator who very obviously loves her students and her
school. Karen faces every challenge with professionalism, and works hard to
provide every student with a fun and high-quality first grade experience. Her own
first grade team members have described her as patient, caring, a talented mentor,
an amazing role model, and a loyal advocate for both students and teachers. While
she is affectionately referred to as “St. Karen” by her team members, they are
quick to point out that she is a quiet prankster, who enjoys causing a bit of good-
natured chaos with activities like her famous annual Elf on the Shelf.

Minerva Local Schools Superintendent, Mark Scott, stated that teaching first
grade is Karen’s life-calling. He believes that "Mrs. Johnson is a passionate,
dedicated, and accomplished educator who impacts the lives of students each and
every day.” Mr. Scott added that he is also appreciative of Karen’s care, support,
and positive influence of his own son, who was once a first grader in Mrs.
Johnson’s classroom. Another parent was quoted as saying, “Mrs. Johnson has
been so incredibly encouraging, and has done an amazing job building confidence
in my daughter.”

Karen exemplifies the qualities of an exceptional educator, demonstrating
positive leadership and fostering student success both inside and outside of the
classroom. For these reasons and many more, it is clear that Mrs. Karen Johnson is
very deserving of this year’s MLEA Golden Apple Award.

Congratulations, Mrs. Johnson- we are Proud of you- Go Lions!
