The Minerva Public Library has been selected as a recipient of the Libraries Transforming Communities: Accessible Small and Rural Communities Grant through the American Library Association. This initiative supports small and rural libraries in creating more accessible and inclusive spaces for individuals with disabilities. The program provides funding and guidance to help libraries better serve their communities by expanding resources and removing barriers to participation.

As part of the grant application process, Minerva Elementary School intervention specialist MacKenzie Vernier collaborated with the Minerva Public Library, providing professional input and support and highlighting the importance of sensory-friendly resources for students and families. Drawing from her experience working with students with diverse learning and sensory needs, Mrs. Vernier emphasized how sensory supports can help children with autism, ADHD, anxiety, and other sensory processing differences fully participate in community spaces and educational opportunities.

Through this $10,000 grant, the Minerva Public Library plans to expand its collection of sensory-friendly materials and accessibility supports. Resources such as tactile learning tools, fidget items, noise-reducing headphones, and other adaptive materials will help create an environment where all children and families feel comfortable and welcomed. These supports benefit not only individuals with diagnosed sensory needs, but also many children who are developing self-regulation skills or benefit from additional tools to support focus and engagement.

This partnership between the school and the library highlights a shared commitment to inclusion within the Minerva community. By working together, educators and community organizations can help ensure that local spaces remain welcoming, accessible, and supportive for every learner and family.
