MASSILLON, OH – Minerva turned in a powerhouse performance this past Saturday, March 7th, at the Greater Canton Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCCTM) & Stark County ESC Tournament. Held at Massillon High School, the annual "Math Olympics" saw Minerva students from both the elementary and middle schools secure awards and trophies, including six first-place finishes, both individual and team.
Under the direction of a dedicated team of math coaches, the Minerva Mathletes competed in rigorous categories, including Mental Computation, Algebra, and Team Problem Solving.
Elementary Excellence
The Minerva Elementary (MES) team started off strong! Morgan Akins captured 1st place in Geometry & Measurement, while Ben Whitmer took the top spot in Mental Computation. In the Algebra, Data, and Probability category, Theo Maxey earned a 1st-place finish, supported by teammates Gavin Jenkins (3rd) and Peyton Feyas (5th).
The Elementary Team Problem Solving unit, consisting of Jade Toot, Caleb Richeson, and Cora Bryan, also climbed to the top of the podium with a 1st-place victory. Other notable performers included Caleb Oyster (4th, Geometry), Xavier Diley (7th, Number Sense), and a trio of 8th-place finishes from Reagan Casto, Dominic Runion, and Peyton Meyers.
Middle School Mastery
The success continued into the 6th and 7th-grade divisions!
In the 6th grade, Joe Whitehead secured a 1s-place finish in Algebra, Data, and Probability. He was joined on the leaderboard by Carson Richeson and Reagan Lindenbaum, who both earned 2nd-place honors in Geometry and Number Sense, respectively. Weston James took 3rd in Number Sense, while the team of Ray Sanders, Makaylee Toot, and Rorri Johnson earned 3rd place in Team Problem Solving.
The 7th-grade class demonstrated incredible depth, particularly in Algebra, where Minerva swept the top three spots. Slade Patterson took 1st place, followed by Dimo Toot in 2nd and Mia Maxey in 3rd. Journey McNickle added a 2nd-place finish in Number Sense, while Lucy Bloom (5th), Zach Gonzalez (6th), and Maddox Hying (8th) all placed in the top ten. The 7th-grade Team Problem Solving trio of Jackson Schoeppner, Silas Coldwell, and Zach Whitmer also secured a 3rd-place award.
