The Minerva Lions wrestling program secured two automatic state qualifiers and three state alternates, ensuring a strong presence at the Schottenstein Center in Columbus this coming weekend.
Leading the charge were juniors Jason Sivy and Ethan Weaver. Sivy, competing at 150 pounds, battled through a deep bracket to finish 4th, improving his season record to an impressive 37-12. Joining him is 165-pounder Ethan Weaver, who also locked up a 4th-place finish and a state berth, bringing a 31-14 record into the final weekend of the season.
Lincoln Wallace and Shawn Weaver are state alternates. Wallace, a senior leader for the team, capped off a district run with a victory to secure 5th place at 157 pounds (39-12). Meanwhile, freshman Shawn Weaver proved he belongs on the big stage, winning his 5th-place bout at 120 pounds (30-16). Both will serve as state alternates. Additionally, Bailey Hilliard placed 5th at the OHSAA girls district tournament to earn an alternate position.
Minerva Head Coach Kenny Beaumariage was high in his praise for the grit his team displayed.
"Jason and Ethan fought through some of the toughest competition in the state to punch their tickets. They've shown that they can compete with anyone in Ohio, and we’re excited to see them compete in Columbus."
The OHSAA State Championships begin Friday, March 13, at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of The Ohio State University.
