MES 2017-2018 Information

Every Child Every Minute Every Day

Minerva Elementary School is pleased to welcome all students and families to the 2017 - 2018 school year. It is our duty and commitment to create a safe and supportive learning environment that meets the needs of all students.   We strive to provide a school culture in which parents, teachers and staff work as a team to develop each child’s potential. Our goal is for students to experience a well-rounded educational program that helps them harness their uniqueness and strengths.

Your child’s teacher is your primary communication resource. I encourage you to connect with them and create a partnership that will serve in the best interest of your child.

I am honored to be the Principal at Minerva Elementary School, and I look forward to working with students, staff, families and community members in making Minerva Elementary a school students love to attend--one that makes our community proud.

Get Ready for Kindergarten

  • Get Ready for Kindergarten will be Monday, August 14 through Wednesday, August 16
  • Each day will begin at 9:00 AM and end at 1:00 PM
  • Please enter through Door D
  • Free Breakfast will be available starting at 8:30
  • A free school lunch will be provided each day as well
  • Class lists will be posted at Door D by the morning of Monday, August 14

First Day of School

  • The first day of school for Minerva Elementary School students is on Wednesday, August 23
  • Doors open at 8:10 AM
  • Please do not arrive prior to 8:00 AM as there will be no adult supervision until this time
  • Parents are permitted to walk students to class only during the first week of school

MES Start Time

  • Start Time for Minerva Elementary is 8:40
  • Door A opens and Breakfast begins at 8:10
  • Please do not arrive prior to 8:00, as there will be no staff supervision until this time
  • The tardy bell rings at 8:40
  • All car riders and walkers enter through Door A
  • All bus riders enter through Door D
  • Please do not use the public library or YMCA parking lots for drop off and pick up

MES Dismissal Policy

  • Make sure your child’s teacher knows their dismissal plan at the start of the school year
    • Send a note to the teacher when making a change
    • No telephone dismissal changes will be allowed after 12 PM
  • Dismissal Begins at 3:15 for walkers and car riders
  • Kindergarten students and siblings will be dismissed at 3:10
  • Parents may choose Door A--Curbside or Playground for walkers and car riders
  • Kindergarten students and siblings will dismiss at Door D
  • Bus dismissal begins at 3:20
  • Please do not use the public library or YMCA parking lots for drop off and pick up


  • Safety is our primary concern
  • Our procedures help to ensure the safety of all students
  • Thank you for abiding by our safety rules

Volunteer Policy

  • All volunteers must have a background check and participate in the volunteer training
  • All volunteers must sign-in and wear a badge

Holiday Parties Policy

  • Classroom parties will be limited to two parents per
  • Classroom. Check with your teacher if interested in helping

Visitors Policy

  • All visitors must sign-in at the office and wear a visitor’s badge


  • Call the office and report the absence at 330-868-4011 by 10:00 AM
  • A note needs to be sent in upon their return
  • Medical excuses are required after 5 absences
  • Absences of 10 days or more requires meeting with administration and support agencies
  • Absences of 20 or more days in one year are considered truant and the family could be charged with truancy

Dress Code

  • No flip-flops
  • No makeup
  • No hair dye
  • No spaghetti-strap tank tops, halter-tops or bare midriff
  • No hats in the building
  • No clothing advertising violence, sex, drugs or alcohol
  • Shorts cannot be shorter than 3 inches above the knee
  • Shorts are not permitted from October through April

Meet the Teacher Night

Minerva Elementary School is hosting the annual meet the teacher night on Monday, August 21st from 5:00-6:30 PM (Kindergarten 5:00-6:00). Families are invited to tour the building, meet teachers, and visit in the cafeteria. Minerva Elementary School PTO, SPARK and other key organizations will have information table set up in the cafeteria.

Class Lists Posting

Class Lists will be posted on Thursday, August 17, at Door A by 4:00.

Kindergarten class lists will be posted prior to our Get Ready for Kindergarten Program on August 14.

Open House

Minerva Elementary will host our annual PTO open house on Thursday, September 21, from 5:00-7:00 PM. Families and community members are welcome to visit classrooms, view student work and visit the cafeteria for a meal and PTO fun!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Mark your calendars in advance for this year’s MMS Parent Teacher Conferences. Conferences take place in 15-minute time blocks with one or more teachers. Look for more information coming home with your son or daughter closer to that time.

School Fees

  • School fees are $30
  • Checks can be written for fees, or you can pay through https://www.payforit.net/
  • Students who qualify for free lunches may apply for a fee waiver

School Lunches

  • School lunches cost for the 2017 – 2018 school year is $2.35, and milk is $.40
  • You can add money to your student’s account at https://www.payforit.net/
  • Students may charge up to $10
  • If charges exceed the $10 limit, the student will be given a peanut butter sandwich and milk until payment is received
  • Forms are available in the MES Main Office or on the MLSD Web Site to apply for free/reduced lunches
