Minerva Local Schools provide many athletic opportunities. Eighteen varsity sports are offered throughout the school year, 48 different teams are school recognized, which is amazing for a school of our size.
Our students/athletes are held to a much higher standard than normal students. Each student/athlete must be in school by 8:30 AM during their sport season. This ensures our athletes are in class every day, all day to set the tone for the school. If our students/athletes arrive after 8:30 AM without prior arrangements, they are unable to participate in that evening’s practice or game. This year we have begun random drug testing our athletes. A certain number of athletes are selected during the preseason from each team, grades 9-12, another test is administered midseason.
We are very proud of our students, athletes, and coaches. The community support to large fundraising is unbelievable, and our fan base is tremendous. There is an expectation to succeed, which motivates everyone in this department from myself, to the coaches, to the athletes.Minerva competes in the rugged Northeastern Buckeye Conference (NBC), which has been in existence since 1990. Members include: Alliance, Canton South, Carrollton, Louisville, Marlington, Salem, and West Branch. Even though we are the smallest school enrollment wise, we continue in the top three every year for the All-Sports Trophy. We are very proud of our athletic traditions and success over the years, but we have much work to do. The ultimate goal is to be the winner of the NBC All-Sports Trophy.
